Insufficiency of a purely topological approach to phase transitions

چکیده

The relation between thermodynamic phase transitions in classical systems and topology changes in their configuration space is discussed for a one-dimensional, analytically tractable solid-on-solid model. The topology of a certain family of submanifolds of configuration space is investigated, corroborating the hypothesis that, in general, a change of the topology within this family is a necessary condition in order to observe a phase transition. Considering two slightly differing versions of this solid-on-solid model, one showing a phase transition in the thermodynamic limit, the other not, we find that the difference in the “quality” or “strength” of this topology change appears to be insignificant. This example indicates the unattainability of a condition of exclusively topological nature which is sufficient as to guarantee the occurrence of a phase transition.

Generalized GW+Boltzmann Approach for the Description of Ultrafast Electron Dynamics in Topological Insulators

Quantum-phase transitions between trivial insulators and topological insulators differ from ordinary metal-insulator transitions in that they arise from the inversion of the bulk band structure due to strong spin-orbit coupling. Such topological phase transitions are unique in nature as they lead to the emergence of topological surface states which are characterized by a peculiar spin texture t...

Electric control of topological phase transitions in Dirac semimetal thin films

Dirac semimetals host three-dimensional (3D) Dirac fermion states in the bulk of crystalline solids, which can be viewed as 3D analogs of graphene. Owing to their relativistic spectrum and unique topological character, these materials hold great promise for fundamental-physics exploration and practical applications. Particularly, they are expected to be ideal parent compounds for engineering va...

Dynamical phase transitions in glasses induced by the ruggedness of the free energy landscape

We propose damage spreading (DS) as a tool to investigate the topological features related to the ruggedness of the free energy landscape. We argue that DS measures the positiveness of the largest Lyapunov exponent associated to the basins of attraction visited by the system during its dynamical evolution. We discuss recent results obtained in the framework of mode-coupling theory and comment h...

Topological transitions from multipartite entanglement with tensor networks: a procedure for sharper and faster characterization.

Topological order in two-dimensional (2D) quantum matter can be determined by the topological contribution to the entanglement Rényi entropies. However, when close to a quantum phase transition, its calculation becomes cumbersome. Here, we show how topological phase transitions in 2D systems can be much better assessed by multipartite entanglement, as measured by the topological geometric entan...

Topological Transitions in Liquid Liquid Interfaces

A set of fundamental yet ill understood phenomena in uid dynamics involves changes in the topology of interfaces between partially miscible or nominally immiscible uids Such changes occur for example when continuous jets pinch o into droplets when sheared interfaces atomize and when droplets of one uid reconnect with one another These topological transitions occur in many practical applications...
